What is Botox?
Botulinum toxin is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles. People also use Botox to treat excessive sweating, migraines, muscular disorders, and some bladder and bowel disorders.
How does it work?
Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. It is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye) and frown lines. Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to Botox.
Frequently Asked Questions
Botox is safe to use long term, and you can stop using it at any time without yourskin looking worse than it did before you started Botox. When used for cosmetic purposes, medical insurance does not cover Botox treatments. Botox injections use forms of botulinum toxin to paralyze muscle activity temporarily.
Although botulinum toxin is life-threatening, small doses — such as those used in the application of Botox — are considered safe. In fact, only 36 cases of adverse effects associated with cosmetic use were reported to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 1989 and 2003.
Results last longer after several sessions, as the skin has more time to regenerate the collagen it needs to fill in those lines and wrinkles. When injected for cosmetic purposes, Botox lasts four to six months on average, but you can expect the effects of your first treatment to wear off faster.
The injected muscle can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften, and also helps prevent new ones from forming. Botox stays only where injected, it does not roam through the body. "If I inject it in your face, it's not going towork [or show up in] your toe," says Rowe.
